Sephirah Longfall

The Mage Hunter

A professional wanderer, adventurer, thrill seeker, and wielder of the dark arts.

Name: Sephirah "Longfall" Eauleronce
Age: 37
Race: Elezen
Deity: The Dawn
Profession: Adventurer
Status: Bunmarried
Voice: Husky tenor
Cadence: Roughly aristocratic, slight foreign accent
Alignment: Chaotic Good

"A wayfarer may be delicate or crude, artful or awkward, brave or cowardly—he is always a child at heart, living in the first day of creation, before the beginning of the history of the world, his life always guided by a few simple instincts and needs. He may be intelligent or stupid; he may be deeply aware of the fleeting fragility of all living things, of how pettily and fearfully each living creature carries its bit of warm blood through the glaciers of cosmic space, or he may merely follow the commands of his poor stomach with childlike greed—he is always the opponent, the deadly enemy of the established proprietor, who hates him, despises him, or fears him, because he does not wish to be reminded that all existence is transitory, that life is constantly wilting, that merciless icy death fills the cosmos all around."

― Hermann Hesse, Narcissus and Goldmund

Sephirah comes from a long line of loyal knights, setting the foundations of his upbringing. Since childhood he has trained in the ways of war with many different weapons and styles depending on who's burden he was for the day. He proved to be a clumsy squire and altogether foolish adolescent, and yet somehow he stumbled his way into adulthood with all his fingers and toes intact. But rather than follow in his family's footsteps and become a Temple Knight, he turned to adventuring. The lure of freedom and endless wonders called to him, and through the simple act of wandering he discovered he could protect his loved ones without the constraints of knighthood, and the societal chains that would have otherwise held him back.He learned to love the road, the trees, and the sky. He grew to respect the wind, the rain, and the sea. Whenever home would call to him, he would return with a smile and a satchel full of stories, but they were fleeting moments between the incessant call of the wild. He left his family as an awkward lad who never really did get the hang of that sword and board, and with each return he was a little more grown. It became apparent that the dignity of the Paladin and the serenity of the Conjurer were not his way and never would be. With each trial he met, he found more of himself and what worked best for his talents. Those he met along his journey nurtured his potential, shaped him, and unwittingly made him into the beast he would eventually become on the battlefield.

Personality

Sephirah has a good-natured and friendly aire about him. He is quick to smile, joke, and gracefully accept that he is the recipient of much teasing. He is also fiercely passionate, competitive, and sometimes even righteous when it comes to causes he believes in. He is optimistic and sometimes unrealistic, wishing to believe in the best of people. He is very present-minded in that he lives in the moment, always of the opinion that he may not live through tomorrow, and therefore he's been known to have commitment issues in his relationships. Despite some frivolity on his part, he seems to think anyone showing too much skin is in need of religion, so wear your pants!

Yeas & Nays

  • Likes

Traveling/exploration, cooking, fighting, arcane studies, reliable blacksmiths, being stepped on, and ginger cookies.

  • Dislikes

Politicians, stagnation, dragons, voidsent, leeches (literal), undead, pirates, and undead pirates.

  • Triggers

Call him a Reaper again. Do it.

  • Foibles

Because his strength comes in part from his own emotions, the more dire the battle, the more unpredictable he becomes. Due to his chaotic nature and whimsical ways, he is ill-suited to peaceful activities such as meditation or reading (for pleasure). Shiny object > calm conversation.

Combat

Style: Melee caster / debuffer
WoC: Scythes & Greatswords
Aether: Dark

Sephirah is a melee fighter who augments and enhances his attacks with magic. He excels in reading and countering the spells of others, which has earned him his title of "Mage Hunter". His own spells are primarily meant to cripple and enfeeble, stealing the strength of his opponents and using it against them. Due to the nature of his technique, he attempts to be in constant attunement with those around him and often senses their moods or predicts when they will draw on their aether and what sort of spell they plan to form when they do.In physical combat, though lanky and unassuming, Sephirah has more power behind his strikes than most expect. His strength and constitution are his best attributes, and he feeds them at the expense of his opponent. If asked about his style, he will proudly proclaim he is a "classically trained Dark Knight" and a master of turning his emotions into raw power. Whether said emotions remain strictly under his control is up for debate, but that's just DRK 101 stuff.

"It is precisely because we understand the fragility of life that we are made aware of the ephemeralness of our own souls. But do not let any attachment to life cause you fear. Do not let fear of the end lessen your pace. Do not repent for anything!" ―REDACTED

On Attunement

Attunement is how Sephirah describes his way of assessing and connecting to the aether of others. This process can be subtle or it can be jarring depending on his own mood, level of finesse, or even the recipient's talent for aethersense. It has been described by others as a tugging sensation. Under friendly circumstances, this light tugging of one's aether is brief, giving Sephirah a "sense" of their elemental alignment, skill, and sometimes more. Under less than friendly circumstances, the feeling is more like a sudden stab or bite.Once attuned, Sephirah can typically maintain this connection with relative ease unless the target has been disciplined in the ways of controlling their aetherflow beyond just to form spells. Needless to say, monks and other spiritually wise opponents are Sephirah's bane.So what does your aether taste like?*All information gleaned through this technique is up to the opposing player. I do not expect more than you are willing to give.

Code or Principles

Sephirah is chaotic good in all the best and worst ways. He is an adventurer at heart, ready to save the people—and the world—from threats within and without. This strong sense of duty and need to protect others can manifest in both productive ways, and self destructive ways. The current threat that takes up most of the Mage Hunter's time is the Void. Sephirah is of a belief that any tear or rift that allows two worlds to leak into each other will eventually mean the overlapping and destruction of them both. In order to prevent this, he ruthlessly hunts down any and all voidsent. Now, hardly a cold-blooded man, he has also been known to try to cure voidtouched and see them start new lives, but his charity here only extends so far.

Hooks

"My goal is this: always to put myself in the place in which I am best able to serve, wherever my gifts and qualities find the best soil to grow, the widest field of action. There is no other goal." — H.H.

Looking to make some RP? Feel free to use any of the hooks mentioned below.

About You

How Would You Describe Your Aether?

Sephirah doesn't have true aethersight, but he does read the aether of individuals when give an opportunity. It's an active trait, rather than a passive perception. Those well in tune with their own aether might notice his probing because of this. A question I pose many roleplayers is if you could describe your character's aether, what would it be like? The answer can be as vague or detailed as they choose, from color, density and personality, to fuck off and stop looking at me.

Dark Knights & Arcane Scholars

Sephirah is always happy to meet fellow practitioners of the code of the Dark Knight and its arcane arts. While he doesn't necessarily agree with some of the more modern techniques being taught to knights, he is still giddy to compare notes. When he isn't talking about slicing monsters in two and punching knives through the chests of his enemies, he's enthusiastically chatting about magic theory and learning what he can from other mages.Recently he's been known to offer guidance to newer users of the Dark Arts. He doesn't claim to be a skilled teacher by any measure, but when given the choice between watching a fresh Dark Knight lose their mind, and offering to help them control their perhaps newfound gifts, he'll take the latter.

Keepers of the Moon

Look, he doesn't want to talk about it. Just call him a wretch and let him move along with his life.

Void Hunters, Reapers, & Creatures

Sephirah is a veteran voidsent hunter with a number of kills on record and a history of seeking out void-related issues across the land. Voidal rift needing to be closed? He's there. Voidsent said to be terrorizing a place? He'll hurry to the spot. He won't speak of the profession in polite company due to the panic it can cause in a crowd, but if he meets other void hunters, he's happy to team up. If you are a reaper or voidsent and want someone on your tail or some combat RP, hit me up! It doesn't have to be a deadly encounter.

*Note to Voidtouched Roleplayers: Fear not! I won't initiate hostilities without consent.

About Him

Ethos (Coming Soon)

An upcoming voidhunting business run by Sephirah and Cyne. They are currently still gathering funds and sponsors to get the joint venture rolling in an official capacity.

Reputation: The Mage Hunter

It's possible you've heard of someone in your travels named "The Mage Hunter". This was a nickname given to Sephirah by a previous employer and it seems to have followed him around in the form of a title, or perhaps a warning to those who decide to practice the voidal and forbidden arts. Given that the void is such a sensitive subject, Sephirah has embraced this title as a means to introduce himself without speaking aloud his actual talents. Though, if you really ask him what his profession is, he will always say "Adventurer!"

Aethersense

Beyond the façade of ambient aether, Sephirah is an unbalanced disaster leaning completely umbral. (Current lore would call this "Astral Darkness"). Despite this, he's somehow managed to keep his Spoken form together, so that's nice. And possibly fleeting.

Pious & Devout

Sephirah is an ardent worshipper and can be found at shrines, temples, and cathedrals across the land. Ishgard being his favorite city-state, whenever he visits he spends most of his time in the cathedral engaged in silent contemplation or prayer.

Bonds

"If the journey itself is indeed the most important piece, rather than the destination itself, then I traveled not to avoid duty—but to seek it. It becomes the responsibility of every man, upon realizing he lacks the truth, to seek it out. Yes, I began my journey alone, and I ended it alone. But that does not mean that I walked alone."

―The Way of Kings

Player Characters

Besties with a side of crazy hot.

Veke Illska

Sephirah doesn't recall the exact circumstances under which he met Veke. He was a disaster at the time, to say the least, but he remembers she was a prisoner. A prisoner of his employer. She had cooperated as much as could be expected from an insanely feral cat unwilling captive, and it was becoming more and more apparent that she was going to be disposed of. He didn't like that. Apparently he was the only one to care whether Veke lived or died, and she took that to heart. She's a spitfire, an enigma, a menace, and probably a sadist, but Sephirah seems more than a little fond of her for all of it. Sometimes they drift apart, and maybe sometimes they mean for it to be a permanent, but then there they go travelling together again. She currently joins the Elezen in his wanderings, and babysits Yusui's orb when Sephirah runs errands.

Cyne

A talented mage and hunter with a sharp tongue and a no-nonsense lifestyle. Sephirah and Cyne met in the field and later joined together for a few hunts before he somehow convinced the Viera to work with him on a longer project. Against all odds, and despite personalities that do nothing but clash, they've slowly formed a concrete bond through hours and hours of arguments and Sephirah's unwillingness to let Cyne's quips get under his skin (mostly—he's not fat, okay? Robes are just unflattering over a layer of chainmaille). Cyne remains sharp-tongued, sarcastic, and endlessly annoyed with everything around him, but Sephirah seems to find that part of him charming and he's come to enjoy the Viera's honesty, integrity, begrudging support, and most of all, his company. For all the apparent toxicity between the two in public, they are overprotective, stalwart pillars for each other that ensure the other is getting exactly what they need no matter the cost. History will say they were just roommates Maybe it's a good thing Cyne didn't lock his door.

Seph's parents won't be getting any biological grandchildren, but he thinks they'd agree that this is the wife he's always needed.

Literally everyone on this list is a red flag and this one is the reddest. With blood.

Yusui

A voidsent bound to Sephirah until he can discover the means to destroy him completely. Sephirah still doesn't know enough about Yusui to make a proper assessment, but he thinks him old and especially dangerous. He was too powerful to kill at the time, and without a proper container to seal him in, Sephirah was forced into the old fashioned last resort: chains of binding between himself and the creature. Whether Yusui came willingly out of curiosity, or truly was captured, is yet uncertain. Since Sephirah and Cyne killed his host body, Yusui has returned to a moth-like form, and has recently gone missing. Needless to say, Sephirah is in a panic about it.

Ahzra'li Lhomi

A stoic and secretive Keeper to whom Sephirah owes his life. Ahzra'li, or "Ander" as he knows him best, is a part of an organization Sephirah used to work for, and one that helped him out of a rough spot a few years prior. He's eager to repay the kindness in any way he can, such that whenever Ander calls on him, he's there. Recently, Ander has been studying the ways of the Dark Knight as a means to control his odd aether, and Sephirah has been trying to help him to the best of his abilities.

Ahzra'li's husband is going to kill Seph.

Lyaeus is Seph's polar opposite, which means he's going to get in trouble here in some form or another.

Lyaeus Fuarain

Lyaeus was discovered on a recent mission to close a few rifts to the void in The Black Shroud. While much of his nature and origins is still a mystery to Sephirah beyond that he is a member of the Conjurer's Guild and a skilled voidhunter, he's nevertheless come to call the Seeker a friend in the time they have spent working together. Lyaeus is a kind creature with an almost parental-like attitude towards Sephirah's bumbling idiocracy, and frankly between the three voidhunters in their group, they need Lyaeus' down-to-earth responsibility. Someone has to tell them to eat and sleep or else they're all bound to get swept up in Sephirah's next grand adventure without pause.

Ionel Devereux

Ionel had the misfortune of finding Sephirah dying in a ditch, and enough poor judgement to pull him out of it. Okay, maybe saying he was dying is a little dramatic, but Sephirah likes to tell the story as if Ionel is a hero amongst men, and will say nothing but good things about the Stag Knight. Considering Ionel is such a fresh acquaintance, Sephirah likely puts far too much faith and trust in him, but he sees nothing wrong with that of course. Ionel in his mind has a gentle nature cloaked in a deep melancholy. He also is a fierce fighter, swift and merciless when the moment takes him—something Sephirah can relate to. He has lost his home, his House, and more to evil beyond his control and given that he helped Sephirah out of a tight spot, the Elezen is insistent he repay the favor by helping him with said evil. Unfortunately, undead are very spooky.

Seph should stay away from this one, but he's a fucking idiot, so there he goes: being helpful.

Extra

"And so, does the destination matter? Or is it the path we take? I declare that no accomplishment has substance nearly as great as the road used to achieve it. We are not creatures of destinations. It is the journey that shapes us. Our callused feet, our backs strong from carrying the weight of our travels, our eyes open with the fresh delight of experiences lived."

What should we RP?

Welcome and thanks for taking a look at Seph's carrd.

I find these sections on carrds always read wrong if you don't know the person writing them. All I can say is try to read the following in the spirit in which it was intended: to explain what I enjoy, and what makes my skin crawl. That said: Age and all levels of experience are welcome within reason and if appropriate for the content being written. I don't participate in themes that infantilize women1 or paint all men as rapists. I'll RP just about anything as long as it makes sense in the moment, and we've both said we're comfortable with it. I used to say fetish characters didn't bother me, but I've learned my lesson.I won't hold anything against role players using aspects of game mechanics in their roleplay. Hell, I do it, too! But that said, changing jobs suddenly IC and roleplaying weapons as bound to specific jobs, are examples of mechanics that I prefer to abstain from myself.Wanna hear my rant on power levels?

1. Meaning any adult woman who acts like a minor. Newborn androids, 500 year olds who look 12, "innocent and pure" adventurers (the virginity fetish) who have travelled the world and have no idea what a whore house is. It's not cute, it's creepy. And don't tattle on yourself by telling me "they're just small statured" when they have pigtails, youthful mannerisms, and wear tons of ruffles. Legal in Japan isn't legal for me.2. Bending, adding to, and building upon the lore is not breaking lore. Saying your Auspice OC is a 20 year old catgirl is.

My Hot Take - Power Level

I wrote this because I was bored and now we all have to hear my dumb opinions. Feel free to tell me to shove it up my own ass. I won't be offended. You really don't have to take this seriously.

My theory on OC power levels and the trifecta of superpowers:

There are three superpowers: Money, Tech, and Magic.
A character can safely have one of these. They can reasonably have two. They often cannot have all three without becoming an OP mess.

Characters possessing all three of these can exist, and if your character does, they are not automatically bad. I just think that before they are created with all three of these superpowers, the player should consider how adept the character is meant to present as, and how normal it would be for that character to exist in normal society, interacting with normal people, doing something as mundane as working at a café.

The breakdown:

  • Money — as in rich as fuck. You never need to worry about coin and can solve most of your problems by throwing money at them. It's pretty self-explanatory, but this one can sneak up on us.

Sorry, did you say the mafia is after me? That's cute. I can afford 1,000 bodyguards and the best of the best of everything, from education to lifestyle. Hells, my wallet has a wallet, so suck it, pleb.

  • Technology — as in a tech genius who can build anything. You know how to use magitek despite not ever being a part of the Empire. You can reverse engineer ancient Allagan technology with ease or have mastered electrope. You can solve all your problems with tech.

A monster is attacking us? Easy mode. I have a mega defense system at my disposal. If that doesn't work? I'll build something better or discover something new!

  • Magic — the great power in Eorzea. You can't just use magic though, you're a gifted adept. Whether you were born with it, or just studied it for years, you cast spells that the average person would find fantastical. All your problems can be solved with the right spell, be they passive or aggressive.

Your friend has a rare ailment that no one has figured out the cure for in a hundred years? Don't worry! I have a spell for that. Or a porxie.

So where's Sephirah in all this? He's magical, of course. Sephirah was designed for "High" power level play so that the average voidsent wouldn't sneeze him into an early grave. Can he do forbidden magicks? Yes. Can he solve all his problems with magic? Gods does he wish. I try to keep him safe, and keep him humble, and I will always happily talk about limitations that make us all happy to play in the same sandbox.

Our Mission

Tired of bar hopping and making small talk? Tired of AVOIDING bar hopping because you don't want to be dragged into a fight? Or maybe you just wish someone would HIT you already?!Look no further. Here at Void Busters Inc. (name pending) we offer full void hunting, sealing, culling, purging, and investigative services. If you play a void hunter, voidsent, void summoner, or even just a mildly voidtouched character and want to build their reputation with a chance to actually roleplay the gritty sides of the archetype, we're here to say we want to, too! We'll meet with you OOC to get to know you and your character (without spoilers) and plot out a fun encounter for everyone. Because really, what's the point of playing a voidsent if you can't eat a few souls or get stabbed once or twice a week?We also offer team ups with other void hunters, their groups/FCs, etc. Hit us up!

What We Do

We work within the confines of everyone's comfort zone. We'll help loosely plot out what the goal of the encounter should be and whether or not it will be ongoing or just a one-off. We can sever your character's connection with the void, bind or seal them, injure/terrorize them, or just throw insults back and forth if that's your thing. The punishment isn't one-sided, of course, there's always the possibility that the void hunters lose. We can discuss skill level comparisons if that's your thing, but at the end of the day, when in doubt, roll it out. /random is more than enough.Want to be added to our marks list? (Coming soon!)

  • Loose planning to achieve a narrative goal

  • Character injury, either physical or other

  • Reputation crafting. Do we know you? Do you know us?

  • Dice rolls when opposing checks are uncertain

  • Fully GM'd encounters, either multi-session or one-offs

  • Co-Op sessions with other groups and FCs

What We Don't Do

No drama, no dick wagging, and no OOC malice. We want the fun of a roleplay battle and all the consequences that come with it. We won't permanently injure or kill your character without consent, and likewise we expect the same courtesy to be extended to our hunters. We won't claim transcendent abilities gifted to us from God and Bahamut, and we won't roleplay with other lore breakers or characters who have special relationships with story NPCs. Most of all, we won't charge you gil. Roleplay should be for fun, not for funding someone's housing addiction.

  • Completely scripted encounters

  • Nonconsensual character death/maiming

  • Godmodding/power trips/autos

  • Outright lore breaking

  • Story NPC relationships (eg. Thancred, Nidhogg, etc)

  • OOC bigotry and hate

  • Ask for real gil

Our Hunters

"Onward! To Adventure!"

Longfall

Sephirah is a heavy hitting, passionate knight who has been known to be a mage's bane. He excels in countering others by attuning to their aether and then syphoning their vitality, magic, or even cognitive abilities. The longer the fight, the stronger—or more unstable—he might become. Once his opponents are dazed and weakened, he either crushes them or attempts to sever their access to their own aetherical reserves.

What we do:

  • Investigate: Forces like these are not always easy to recognize. If you suspect the void lingers near your village, a friend or relative has been corrupted, or one of them walks among you, we'll root out the corrupted and recommend next steps.

  • Voidgate Sealing: If your town is seeing more and more voidal pests nearby, chances are there's tear through which they are coming. We'll slap a "No Void Allowed" sign on it quicker than you can say "dimensional disturbance!"

  • Purge: Need a death? Call the pros. Voidsent shouldn't be handled alone nor by the common man. Let the professionals slay or banish them back to the realm they belong in.
